The main road of the town is Via Atenea, which crosses the old medieval part of the city, it is a kind of open air shopping center, with many nice shops,like jewelry stores,boutiques, bookshops and pastryshops. Close to the Via Atenea is via Michele Foderà from where you can get to an old abbey, The abbey of Santo Spirito. Inside the church of the monastery you can admire the statues of white stucco made by the famous artist Serpotta in the early 18th century. The old monastery on the first floor also hosts a small folk museum with some paintings of the early 19th century. If you ring the bell getting back to the ground floor of the abbey, you can ask for some almond pastries,and a nun will appear with a plate of sweets. In the old town you can also visit the church of ”Santa Maria dei Greci” built on top of the remains of a Greek temple and the Norman cathedral built in the 11th century.

From the city you drive down the Via Panoramica with leads you to wonderfu “Valley of the Temples”, even if the temples aren’t located in a Valley but instead on ridge.

The Temples were built during the 5th B.C by Greek settlers mainly from Crete and Rhodes, when the ancient Greek polis of “Akragas “ reached its peak.The archaeological park covers an area of 1300 hectares (2600 acres).

The site is also a landscape park with a rich biodiversity: one thousand old olive trees, almond trees,pistacchio trees and citrus gardens.

Not far away from the Valley of the Temples, there’s another interesting and lovely archaeological site Heraclea Minoa, on top of a steep promontory with white cliffs overlooking the ocean, there are still the remains of an ancient theatre and part of the ancient city wall.

It consists of an amazing stretch of the Agrigento coastline with a white rocky cliff and has become a tourist attraction thanks to the detective stories of “Inspector Montalbano” written by the author Andrea Camilleri from Porto Empedocle.

Just outside Agrigento in the locality “Caos” you can get to the birthplace ( Casa natale di Pirandello, Museum) of Luigi Pirandello, Italian dramatist, novelist,poet and short story writer. He was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The most beautiful monuments the Town are the castle of the Chiamonte family located on the highest part of the city, with round shaped towers and built in the XIII-XIV centuries near by is the old Norman cathedral of Naro with a beautiful gothic portal, admire also the Church of Santa Caterina.

The city is known being the birthplace of the modern italian writer Leonardo Sciascia, key attractions of the city are the Fondazione Sciascia, a 13th Chiaramonte castle and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte.

Selinunte is famous for being one of the largest archeological sites in Europe, it covers an area of 377 hectares. The archeological park holds an impressive sacred area with majestic temples like the temples “E”, “G”,”F”.
The Acropolis of Selinunte , with its temples, dwellings and fortifications offers a spectacular view over the mediterranean sea.

In antiquity the city was an important trading centre and with a big harbour.The city came to a tragic end in 408 a.C, when the polis was sieged and destroyed by the Carthaginians.
You can also admire an unique landscape: a fusion between the ancient ruins and the maritime and demi desert landscape with a very impressive impact.
